We train dancers of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you are a child discovering rhythm for the first time, or an adult returning to an art form you have always loved — there is a place for you here. What we ask is not experience, but honesty and dedication.

Levels of Training

Three Stages of the Journey

Each level builds upon the last, and each requires its own form of patience.

I

Beginner

The foundation of a lifelong practice. Here, the body learns the language of Kathak from its first syllable — the position of the feet, the alignment of the spine, the relationship between movement and breath.

  • Focus Basic tatkaar, introductory thaat and posture, simple compositions
  • Age Open to all ages. Children from age 6 and above are welcome.
  • Duration Typically 1–2 years, progressing at the student's own natural pace
III

Advanced

For the dedicated dancer who has laid a strong foundation and wishes to refine, deepen, and in time, make Kathak truly their own. Training at this level is close, personal, and demanding — in the best possible sense.

  • Focus Advanced compositions, solo recital preparation, intensive abhinaya, Lucknow gharana repertoire
  • Entry By assessment. Minimum 4–5 years of Kathak training required.
  • Duration Ongoing — there is no ceiling to this level of practice

A Note on Our Methods

How We Teach

At Nataraj Nrityalay, learning is never hurried. We do not measure progress by the number of compositions a student has memorised, but by the quality of understanding that underlies each movement. A student who truly understands a single composition will be able to extend that understanding across the art form; a student who has learned many compositions without understanding will always feel uncertain.

Classes are conducted in small groups to ensure personal attention. Corrections are given with care and specificity. Students are encouraged to ask questions, to explore the context of what they are learning — the history of a composition, the meaning of a raga, the deity to whom a piece of abhinaya is addressed — because an informed dancer is an expressive one.

The relationship between teacher and student at this academy is one of mutual respect. Students are expected to be punctual, attentive, and to practise consistently outside of class. In return, they receive Guru Reva Rakesh Medhekar's full attention, knowledge, and care for their development as both dancers and individuals.
